BUS DRIVER KILLED Ctg transport workers call 48-hour strike

The transport workers of Chattogram on Tuesday called a 48-hour transport strike, for two 24-hour periods, on 68 district and 19 local routes from 6:00am today with a break on Friday and Saturday in protest against the killing of a bus driver.
Shyamoli Paribahan driver Jalal Uddin, 50, who was from Dinajpur, was killed at Patia on his way to Chattagram from Cox’s Bazar on Monday night.
The bus supervisor, Azim Uddin, alleged that the driver was beaten to death by 7-8 people who identified them as detectives.
The Chattogram Zila Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation president Mrinal Chowdhury said that the first 24-hour strike, for passenger transports, would be enforced from 6:00am on Wednesday to 6:00am on Thursday on 68 district routes connecting Chattogram and 19 local routes.
They called the other 24-hour strike for both passenger and goods transports from 6:00am on Sunday to 6:00am on Monday in greater Chattogram.
They demanded immediate arrest of the killers and bringing them to justice. Otherwise they would go for a tougher movement, said East Zone Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation and Chattogram Zila Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation on Tuesday evening.
Bus supervisor Azim Uddin said that the Shymoli Paribahan bus began its journey from Cox’s Bazar for Chattogram at 8:00pm on Monday. At about 11:30pm it reached Vellapara near Shikalbaha Bridge at Patiya.
Suddenly 7-8 people got on the bus, who, saying that they were members of the Detective Branch of the police, started a search on the bus, he said.
According to Azim, they handcuffed driver Jalal, took him to the opposite side of the road and beat him. Then they, bringing him back to the bus, asked him where he kept Yaba pills.
As Jalal was repeatedly saying that he had no Yaba, they again took him on the street and beat and kicked him, said Azim.
At last they took him on the bus and left away.
After the incident the bus was taken to the counter by another driver.
Azim said that at 2:30pm they took Jalal to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Shaymoli Paribahan Chattogram region general manager Babul Ahmed said that they contacted the police superintendent of Chattogram who advised them to file a case in this connection.
City Detective Branch (port zone) deputy commissioner SM Mostain Hossain said that no team from their branch went on any such operation on Monday.
Zila Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation president Md Musa said that those who dragged out the driver from the bus carried handcuffs, walkie-talkies and arms, adding that they came in a white microbus.
