Keep unfit vehicles off roads, HC tells govt

The High Court on Monday directed the government to keep unfit motor vehicles off the roads across the country.
The court also prohibited movement of unauthorised vehicles on the roads.
The HC also directed the government to seize 18.77 lakh fake driving licences and take legal actions against those who are holding and using the fake licences.
The High Court also asked the secretaries of road transport and bridges, and home, inspector general of police and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority’s chairman to submit report of compliance to the court in 30 days.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman issued the directive on suo moto after taking cognizance of a report published in the Daily Sun on August 2 under caption ‘Road Accidents: 19 lakh fake drivers rule the highways’.
The court also issued a suo moto rule asking the same respondents to explain in four weeks what actions they have taken so far even after having the knowledge that an estimated of around 19 lakh fake licences being held by drivers causing fatal road accidents across the country.
According to the newspaper report, ‘As many as 191 people were killed in 154 road accidents in the country in a single week from July 15 to 21 as 19 lakh fake drivers are ruling the highways recklessly.’
The report also said, ‘Some 60 percent of the accidents take place due to the faults of the drivers who include even the adolescents. Some 1.98 lakh driving licences are alleged to have been issued without examination. Renewal of such licences is also being done in the same manner.’
The court also asked the reporter of the said report, Partha Sarathi Das, to authenticate the report.
