JP may fly Ershad abroad for treatment

Jatiya Party is planning to fly the ailing party chairman HM Ershad abroad for better treatment.

The decision will be finalised after getting clearance from the doctors at Dhaka Combined Military Hospital, JP secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga said following a presidium member decision held at Ershad’s Banani office on Wednesday.

If the doctors at CMH did not allow us to take the patient abroad, we would fly in a specialised doctor, Ranga said.

Ranga said that Ershad was suffering from myelodysplastic syndromes. Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of disorders caused by poorly formed blood cells or ones that do not work properly, according to an expert.

Ershad was also facing problems in his lung, liver and kidney, Ranga said.

He added that the presidium meeting chaired by JP acting chairman GM Quader also discussed various other issues the party might face in case of Ershad’s demise.

The presidium members said that they were sharply divided on the question of possible graveyard for JP chairman and could not come to a conclusion during the meeting.

Some presidium members proposed purchase of land to establish a tomb so that people could come and visit the place from across the country.

Another group of presidium members, however, gave their opinion in favour of burying Ershad either on the premises of Jatiya Sangsad or at the military graveyard at Banani.

The 89-year-old former military dictator, now leader of the opposition, Ershad has been ill for quite some time and was admitted to the CMH on June 22.
