43rd death anniv of Bhasani today

The nation observes today the 43rd anniversary of the death of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, a lifelong fighter for the rights of the oppressed and leader of the toiling masses.

His relentless struggle against imperialism, feudalism and for an exploitation-free, secular and democratic society endeared him to the common people.

His uncompromising fight for the cause of those deprived of their rights earned him the epithet ‘ Majlum Jananeta’ or the leader of the oppressed.

Democratic, secular and left politics in this land greatly owes to him.

Bhasani was the founding president of the Awami Muslim League, now Awami League, which came into being in 1949.

During the historic Kagmari Conference in Tangail, called by the Awami League on 7–8 February, 1957, Bhasani denounced and bade his famous ‘goodbye’ to the Pakistani domination of East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.

On 25 July the same year, he formed the National Awami Party and was elected its president.

Born on December 12, 1880 to Haji Sharafat Ali and Mosammat Mojiron Bibi in Sirajganj of erstwhile East Bengal, Bhasani died on November 17, 1976 in Dhaka. He was laid to rest at Santosh in Tangail.

President Abdul Hamid, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued messages on Saturday paying tributes to the great national leader.

Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations have planned elaborate programmes marking the day.

The BNP has formed a ‘National Committee to Observe Death Anniversary of Moulana Bhasani’ and the committee will place wreaths at Bhasani’s mazar at Santosh, offer prayer and arrange a doa mahfil there today.

The committee will hold a discussion at the National Press Club in the capital on Monday 10:00am.

Ganosamhati Andolan leaders will place wreaths at the leader’s mazar at 10:00am today. This party will hold a discussion at the National Press Club on November 22.

The Workers Party of Bangladesh will hold a discussion at the National Press Club at 3:00pm today to mark the day.

The Shaheed Asad Parishad will hold a poetry recitation session and a discussion in front of the Swoparjita Shawdhinata  sculpture at the Teacher-Student Centre of  Dhaka University at 3:00pm today.

Bhasani Anusaree Parishad leaders will place wreaths at the mazar of the leader in the morning.

The Nagarik Parishad, a civil rights body, held a discussion at the Bangladesh Shishu Kalyan Parishad auditorium in the capital on Saturday to mark the day.

Chaired by Parishad convener Mohammad Shamsuddin, academics BD Habibullah, politician Shamsuddin Milon and others spoke at the programme.

The New Age correspondent in Tangail reported that Khoda-e-Khidmatgar and the National Awami Party (Bhasani) would jointly hold a discussion on the life and works of Maulana Bhasani in the morning on the occasion.

The events the two organisations have planned include placing wreaths at the grave of Bhasani, holding a doa and milad mahfil, mass feeding, blood donation, painting competition, photography exhibition, spiritual songs and discussions on the contribution of the spirited mass leader.

Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University meanwhile organised a memorised Quran recitation competition on Monday on the campus to mark the death anniversary of Bhasani.

The university also held a seminar titled ‘Role of Bhasani in emergence of Bangladesh as an independent country’ on Saturday at its Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Department hall room. University vice-chancellor Alauddin Miah addressed the seminar as the chief guest.

The university would distribute food among the poor in Tangail today and hold a special prayer session after the Zuhr prayer for the sake of leader.
