United Hospital sued for fire that killed 5

The United Hospital was sued for their negligence in the fire incident that killed five patients in the COVID-19 isolation unit.
The family of Vernon Anthony Paul, 74, filed a case against the United Hospital authorities over the incident with the Gulshan police station on Wednesday evening, said Gulshan police officer-in-charge SM Kamruzzaman.
Five patients died in the fire incident at the makeshift COVID-19 unit of United Hospital in Dhaka on May 27.
Vernon was one of the victims of the incident.
Kamruzzaman said that Ronald Ricky Gomez, son-in-law of the deceased Vernon, filed the case.
He accused the United Hospital authorities of negligence, he added.
The United Hospital authorities admitted to the fire service that there were lapses in firefighting and rescue efforts during the blaze that razed the hospital’s COVID-19 isolation unit and killed five patients there.
The High Court on Tuesday asked the inspector general of police, Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha, Fire Service and Civil Defence director-general and the United Hospital authorities to submit its reports on the probe into the deaths of five patients by June 14.
