SC publishes verdicts in appeals of Mojaheed, Salauddin

The Supreme Court on Wednesday published the detailed verdicts in appeals filed by two condemned war crimes convicts Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
The court pronounced the verdicts on June 16 and July 29 respectively rejecting their appeals against their convictions and death sentences handed down by the International Crimes Tribunals.
The publication of the verdicts paved the way for the issuance of warrants by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 for the execution of Mojaheed, also the Jamaat secretary general, and Salauddin, also former Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker.
Mojaheed and Salauddin, however, can now file petitions with the Appellate Division in 15 days seeking review of the verdicts.
They have also the scope of seeking presidential clemency.
Supreme Court registrar general Syed Aminul Islam told New Age that they sent the copy of the verdicts to the tribunal for the next actions.
The verdicts were also posted on the website of the Supreme Court.
On June 16, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of Mojaheed for abetment, planning and facilitating the killing 150 intellectuals in the last three days of the 1971 Liberation War and dumping them in 20 mass graves.
On July 17, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-2, now defunct, pronounced its judgement sentencing Mojaheed to death convicting him of five charges and acquitting him of two charges.
Earlier on July 29, the Appellate Division unanimously upheld the death sentences of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for abetting and participating with Pakistani occupation army in the killing 57 people at Rawjan in Chittagong in April 1971.
On October 1, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced him to death on four charges and jailed him for various terms on five charges.
