SCHOOLBOY SHOOTING : Action ordered against MP on the run

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Monday ordered law enforcement agencies for actions against ruling Awami League lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton for shooting a nine-year-old schoolboy at Sundarganj in Gaibandha on October 2.
Presiding over the weekly cabinet meeting at the Cabinet Division, she said that her government would not take the ‘liability’ of such misdeeds committed by any AL leader, a number of minister said.
Hasina gave the instruction three days after the incident as police neither filed a case against the lawmaker immediately nor took any move to arrest him even after the victim’s family had lodged an attempt-to murder case with the local police station.
‘The Awami League government will not take the liability of the criminal offences if committed by any of the party leaders,’ a minister told New Age quoting Hasina to have told the cabinet meeting.
She, however, said that Manjural had a good role in organsing the Awami League at Sundarganj upazila once dominated by the Jamaat-e-Islami, the minister said.
Manjurul, also Sundarganj upazila Awami League president, allegedly shot Shahadat Hossain Sourav, son of Saju Mia of Gopalcharan village at Sundarganj, on Bamandanga-Sundarganj road in BRAC intersection at about 6:00am on October 2.
Manjurul had gone into hiding after the incident, the local police claimed, saying that the district administration cancelled his arms licence on Sunday.
Victim’s father Saju Mia filed an attempt-to murder case with Sundarganj police station on Saturday evening about two hours after two firearms licensed to Manjurul were submitted to the police station.
‘There is no progress in the investigation into the case…We are sure he [Manjurul] is not staying in the area,’ Sundarganj police station officer-in-charge Zinnat Ali said.
Two bullets hit Shahadat in the left leg and one in the right leg when Manjurul, who was allegedly drunk, opened fire.
The National University on Monday dropped Manjurul from the governing body of the three colleges in Gaibandha under the university – Dhubni Kanchibari College, Sundarganj Mahila College and Sundarganj DW College, said a release.
About the recent killing of a Japanese national in Rangpur, Hasina hinted involvement of some Bangladesh National Party leaders of the area in the incident, said a state minister.
She said that the murder was apparently carried out to ‘discredit’ the government, said the state minister.
Sixty five-year-old Japanese national Hoshi Kunio was shot dead by assailants near his farmhouse in Rangpur on Saturday morning.
