Quarrel over cricket claims GPA 5 holder’s life

A schoolboy was killed in a quarrel over playing cricket in the capital’s Mirpur on Wednesday, hours before his result of GPA 5 in this year’s secondary school certificate examinations was out.
The victim was identified as Babul Shikder, 17, son of Mostafa Shikder and resident of Barabagh area of Mirpur.
He appeared in SSC examinations this year from Mirpur Adarsha Uchcha Bidyalaya, his father Mostafa said.
Hours after his death, results of SSC were published in the afternoon with his result of GPA 5, said Mostafa.
Mirpur police sub-inspector Shahjahan Ali said the police recovered the body of Babul from Notational Institute of Neurology about 1:30pm.
‘He was playing cricket along with some other boys in Dhankhet area in Janata Housing. He was hit in the head with a cricket bat or stumps during a quarrel over a ‘no ball’ dispute, leaving him critically injured,’ Shahjahan said.
Babul was taken to Notational Institute of Neurology where physicians declared him dead, the officer said.
Babul was elder son of Mostafa, a workshop owner at Mirpur.
‘He [Babul] used to tell me he would be an engineer… He had a wish to go abroad for study’, his father said.
‘What will be with his GPA 5 now? All the dreams are shattered now’, he said, lamenting.
Mirpur sub-inspector Shahjahan said three boys were taken into police custody for interrogation, but the key accused was not arrested as of Wednesday evening.
