BNP leader Aslam remanded for 7 days

A Dhaka court on Monday placed BNP joint secretary general Md Aslam Chowdhury on a seven-day remand in connection with the alleged plot to topple the Bangladesh government with the help of Israel.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari passed the order after Gulam Robbani, inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, produced him before the court seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation.
Opposing the remand petition, his counsel Md Sanaullah Miah filed a bail petition before the court, but the court rejected the plea after hearing.
Meanwhile, the court also granted seven-day remand for Aslam Chowdhury’s aide Asaduzzaman Mia for interrogation in connection with the same allegation.
Earlier the detectives arrested the BNP leader Aslam along with his accomplice from Khilkhet area in the capital around 6pm on Sunday.
Chittagong-based businessman Aslam came under severe criticism both in and outside the party after several photographs went viral in social media showing him with Mendi N Safadi, a leader of Israel’s Likud Party and chief of its international diplomacy and public relations.
In the remand petition, the state claimed ‘the BNP leader in collusion with Israel’s spy agency Mossad was hatching a “conspiracy” to overthrow the incumbent Sheikh Hasina government.’
DB police mentioned that ‘Aslman conspired with the Israeli politician to overthrow Awami League government in Bangladesh.’
‘Aslam visited different places in India with the agents of Israel’s detective branch Mossad from March 5 to March 9 and they conspired to topple the elected Bangladeshi government,’ DB official Robbani told the court in the remand plea.
‘As a part of the conspiracy, they took plans to instigate violence and terrorism to topple the incumbent democratic government of Bangladesh, which is a threat for the country and an offence of sedition,’ read the petition.
‘We need 10 days of remand for interrogation of the BNP leader in our custody in a bid to properly investigate the allegation.’
The DB official also said several general dairies were also filed with different police stations including Ramna, Bhatara, Gulshan, Khilkhet, Badda and the process to file regular cases against the BNP leader was under way.
