Killing a part of conspiracy from home, abroad: home minister

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the killing of Mahmuda Khanam, wife of a police officer, was a targeted killing which was a part of a conspiracy hatched at home and abroad.
`We arrested many criminals involved with targeted killings in different areas in the country; drives are continuing to nab the rest,’ said the minister.
He made the remarks after visiting the residence of victim Mahmuda Khanam at OR Nizam Road Residential Area in Chittagong Sunday afternoon.
The minister said, `before the murder, 37 targeted killing occurred in the country and we identified 34 of them. 144 people involved with the killings were arrested, of them 49 gave statements under section 164.’
`Babul Akter, husband of the victim Mahmuda, is an honest, capable and sincere police officer. He has been working to stop militant activities for the last couple of years. He struck fear in the heart of militants,’ said Kamal.
`Mahmuda might have been killed to derail the ongoing drives against the militants by breaking the confidence of police members. But they (killers) were not able to break the confidence of police. Soon, we will arrest the criminals involved with this killing,’ he said.
The state minister said ‘we are working for ensuring security of all the people in the country. Security will also be provided to the family members of policemen.
The state minister visited the victim’s residence after attending an event at the Border Guard Training Centre at Satkania upazila.
The first Namaz-e-Janaza of Mahmuda Khatun was held around 3:30 pm at Dampara Police Line Field where people from different walks of life attended.
