Maniruzzaman Miah dies

Educationist and a former Dhaka University vice-chancellor M Maniruzzaman Miah died of old age complications at Square Hospitals in Dhaka on Monday noon.
He was 81.
Maniruzzaman Miah was hospitalised Sunday night in a critical condition and breathed his last around Monday noon, said his brother M Asaduzzaman.
All academic activists but final exams at the Dhaka University will remain closed today to mourn his death, said university public relations office acting director Nur-e-Islam.
The body will be kept at the hospital mortuary on Monday night and will be taken to Dhaka University geography and environment department at 11:00am today for public viewing.
His first namaj-e-janaza will be held at Dhaka University central mosque after zuhr prayers and the second at Gulshan Azad Mosque after asr prayers tomorrow.
Maniruzzaman will be buried at Banani graveyard today, said M Asaduzzaman.
Maniruzzaman, a confirmed bachelor, was born in 1935 in Murshidabad of West Bengal, India, and had done his Master’s in geography from Rajshahi University in 1957. He began his teaching carrier at the then Jagannath College in 1958 and joined DU geography department in 1966.
He became VC of the university in March 1990 and ended his tenure in August 1992.
Maniruzzaman also headed an education commission named after him in 2003 and was also a commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission in 2004.
He was an ambassador to Senegal. Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir offered condolences at his death.
