Mujib’s 95th birth anniv today
The 95th anniversary of birth of the country’s founding president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be observed today in a befitting manner.The day will also be celebrated as National Children’s Day. The day is a public holiday.On this day in 1920, Sheikh Mujib was born at Tungipara in Gopalganj district.Mujib with his courage, uncompromising leadership and through an epic struggle inspired the Bengali nation to fight against the exploitation and repression by Pakistani rulers and led the country to its independence in 1971.On August 15, 1975, Mujib was assassinated, along with most of the members of his family, by a group of army personnel.He was honoured with international Joliot-Curie Award for his contribution to world peace and democracy.Awami League and its associate bodies as well as different political parties, professional and socio-cultural organisations have chalked up programmes to mark the day.Paying rich tributes to the great leader, president Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion.Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujib, accompanied by the central leaders of AWami League and cabinet members will place wreaths at his grave at Tungipara this morning and pay tributes to the independence leader. The Awami League’s programmes for the day include hoisting of the national and party flags at Bangabandhu Bhaban and all the party offices at 6:30am and placing of wreaths at Mujib’s portrait in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi road 32 at 7:00am.Sheikh Hasina will attend a children’s rally, discussion, book fair and a cultural function to be organised at Tungipara marking the day.In observance of the day, Awami League will hold a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital at 3:00pm on Wednesday with party president Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
