EC's dialogue with stakeholders mere eyewash: Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday alleged that the Election Commission's nearly three months  long talks with stakeholders is mere 'eyewash' and it will not be able to do anything for holding a fair and neutral general election.

'The entire nation is looking at the Election Commission. The commission could not do anything,' Fakhrul said addressing a protest meeting in the capital.

He expressed doubt that whether the Election Commission has any strength and morale to carryout work ignoring the desire of those who have appointed them.

BNP Dhaka city south unit organised the protest meeting at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh to protest at issuance of arrest warrant against the party's senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman.

The secretary general said most of the political parties during the dialogue proposed for holding the next general election under a neutral government.

BNP had joined dialogue with the commission led by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on October 15.

On July 31, the EC had launched the pre-poll dialogue ahead of next general election with different stakeholders including political parties, civil society, journalists and election experts and concluded on Tuesday.
