Zia’s death anniv today
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party and different socio-political and cultural organisations will observe today the 34th death anniversary of late president Ziaur Rahman, who founded the party in 1978.
BNP and its associate organisations have taken up two-week programmes to observe the death anniversary of Zia, also a sector commander in the war of liberation who was adorned with gallantry award Bir Uttam.Ziaur Rahman, the then president, was assassinated by a group of army officers at Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981.
Zia, who was the 7th president of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981, was born on January 19, 1936 at Bagbari village in Bogra.
The programme to mark Zia’s death anniversary began on May 27 through a discussion meeting organised by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, the BNP-backed women organisation, which was followed by another discussion on Thursday organised by the BNP.
More discussion meetings on Zia would be organised by the party’s other and associate bodies.Other programmes taken up include voluntary blood donation, free medial camp , prayer sessions and distribution of food among the poor.The party flags would be hoisted at half mast along with black flags atop BNP offices across the country today.Party leaders and activists would wear black badges.
The BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, along with her party leaders and activists, would place wreaths and offer fateha at the grave of Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in this morning.
Khaleda is scheduled for distributing food among the destitute in various areas in the capital from today to Monday.
All district and city units of the BNP across the country would hoist the party flag at half mast and black flag atop at the party offices today and would observe different programmes on their own.
