Inu demands Zia’s posthumous trial for Col Taher murder

The minister for information, Hasanul Huq Inu, on Tuesday demanded posthumous trial and punishment of former President Ziaur Rahman for killing freedom fighter Col Abu Taher.
‘General Zia killed freedom fighter Taher on this day in 1976 as part of his deep-rooted conspiracy to perpetuate his power,’ he said.
Inu, also Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president, urged all to be vocal to press for the posthumous punishment of Zia, whom he brands as a villain of history, and all those involved in Taher killing.
The minister further said there are instances of posthumous trials in the world for such heinous offences.
Inu also urged all to forge a political alliance to drive out the evil forces of war criminals and militancy from Bangladesh’s soil forever.
The minister was addressing a discussion marking the 39th death anniversary of Colonel Taher, a sector commander during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh, at the party’s city office after placing wreaths on his portrait.
Taher was arrested and put on trial by a military tribunal that sentenced him to death on charges of mutiny and treason. He was executed on July 21, 1976.
Inu said though they lost Taher, Zia could not survive as he also lost power. ‘It’s clear through the court verdict that the secret execution was an injustice, and General Zia was a cold-blooded killer.’
The Information Minister also alleged that Zia and his followers had made the Cantonment a slaughtering zone, said a PID handout.
Jatiya Sramik Jote president Shirin Akter MP, wife of Colonel Taher Lutfa Taher MP, JSD general secretary Sharif Nurul Ambia, Jatiya Nari Jote president Afroza Haque Reena, among others, spoke on the occasion.
