JP MP questions Shajahan Khan’s road safety job

Jatiya Party lawmaker Fakhrul Imam on Monday questioned the rationality of making former shipping minister Shajahan Khan as the head of a committee formed Sunday to ensure road safety.
Raising a supplementary question in parliament, Fakhrul said asked it whether it would be fruitful to control illegal drugs by ex-Awami League lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi and ensure road safety by Shajahan.
‘Huge controversy was created across the country after Shajahan Khan’s comment that driving licences could be given any person who could differentiate between a cow and a goat. His smile [over deaths of two students] created a dangerous situation in the country,’ Fakhrul said.
Road Transport and Bridges minister Obaidul Quader replied that Shajahan was made the chief of the committee as an experienced person in the sector.
He said that they convened an emergency meeting of the National Road Safety Council on Sunday as the road safety situation deteriorated recently and road accidents were on the rise.
He said that the 15-member committee was formed at the meeting to made recommendations to control the road accidents, and Shajahan Khan’s name was proposed as the head of it and none at the meeting opposed the proposal.
He also said the report will be prepared by all the committee members, not by any individual. 
Giving his personal explanation, Shajahan slammed Fakhrul Imam for questioning the committee headed by him.
He urged speaker to expunge Fakhrul’s remarks about him.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury assured him that she would look into the matter. 
Shahjahan Khan, also a leader of transport workers, reiterated that only drivers were not responsible for road accidents. 
He said that the committee headed by him would take effective steps to reduce road accidents.
