Autopsy says excessive burns caused Nusrat’s death
Dhaka Medical College Hospital forensic department chief Md Sohel Mahmud on Saturday handed to the police the post-mortem report of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, which said that excessive burns caused her death.
Shahbagh police station’s constable Md Ramjan Ali collected the report in the afternoon and the findings were reported to the investigation officer of the case, Shahbagh police station’s duty officer sub-inspector Md Jasim Uddin told New Age.
He said that the IO was scheduled to receive the report on Monday.
Sohel Mahmud told reporters at the DMCH that they found that excessive burns on her body as well as burns in the respiratory system caused her death, adding that they found no other cause of the death.
Police Bureau of Investigation inspector Md Shah Alam of Feni has been investigating the case.
In Feni, students of Mangalkandi High School under Sonagazi upazila, their guardians and teachers formed a human chain near the school, demanding exemplary punishment for the killers of Nusrat.
In Barishal city, three voluntary organisations – Lal Sabuj Society, Uchchhas and Barishal Blood Donors Club –formed a human chain in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall with their faces covered with black veils, protesting violence against women.
Male and female participants of this silent programme carried placards with slogans protesting torture against women, demanding speedy trial for such crimes and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
Nusrat was sexually harassed by her madrassah principal Siraj in his office room on May 27 and, on the following day, he was arrested after her mother lodged a case against him in this connection.
She was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly on orders from Siraj in jail as she refused to withdraw her complaint against him.
On April 10, Nusrat died, while on life support, at the DMCH burn unit.
A total of 21 suspects have been arrested so far in Nusrat murder case. Eight of them, including all five who allegedly took part in setting the victim afire, have made confessional statements in the court.
