HC rejects Khaleda’s bail petition
The High Court Division on Wednesday summarily rejected former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail application in the Zia Charitable Trust case.
A bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman passed the order after hearing the application for two days.
Though the two judges left the courtroom immediately after rejecting her application, lawyers said ‘shame’ ‘shame’ and called them ‘dalals’.
Justice Obaidul Hassan looked at the lawyers before entering his chamber.
Besides, senior lawyers, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other party leaders were present in the packed-courtroom.
The bench rejected the bail application on the plea that she was handed the highest sentence and also because the attorney general had asked for disposing of her appeal against the sentence expeditiously instead of granting her bail.
Before reading out the prepared order, the bench took recess for 10 minutes.
Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Zainul Abedin appeared for Khaleda.
On October 30, 2018 the High Court enhanced her punishment to 10 years in the case after dismissing her appeal.
