Another Rohingya killed in ‘gunfight’ after arrest
Another Rohingya, suspected to be involved with the murder of local Juba League leader, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in hilly area of Jadimura in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Noor Mohammad, 34, son of late Kala Meah of Jadimura in Teknaf.
He was the prime accused in the murder case filed in connection with the killing of local Juba League leader Omar Farook, said the police.
Teknaf Juba League leader Omar Farook was shot to death allegedly by Rohingya people on August 22.
The police, so far, arrested five Rohingyas as suspected killers of Omar Farook and with Noor, four of them were killed in ‘gunfights’ with the police.
Aman Ullah, another Rohingya and suspected killer of Farook, was now in police custody.
Teknaf police officer-in-charge Pradeep Kumar Das said that they arrested Noor Mohammad and another Rohingya Aman Ullah raiding at Ulochamari hill of Hnila in Teknaf on Saturday afternoon.
Later, on early Sunday, a police team, along with Noor, went to Jadimura hilly area for in search of his accomplices.
When the police reached the area, Noor’s accomplices opened fire on them to snatch their leader, prompting police to retaliate with gunshots that triggered the gunfight, the OC said.
After the hour-long gunfight was over, the police rescued Noor Mohammad with bullet injures and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
The police also seized four locally made guns, one three-quarter gun and 18 cartridges from the spot
Three police personnel — inspector ABMS Doha, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Tekanf police, constable Arsadul Hoque and constable Antar Chowdhury—were injured in the gunfight.
According to local people, Noor Mohammad entered Bangladesh along with his family in 1992.
He owns four houses at Jadimura.
He managed to collect smart national identity card in his name from Chittagong City Corporation in 2017.
The card bearing number 6004589963 shows him as Noor Alam, son of Kala Meah and Saro Begum, and born on 25 in 1983. It shows his permanent address at Masterer Mar Bari, Burma Colony Hill View Road, at West Sholashahar Part-2, 4211, in Panchlaish of Chattogram.
Saidul Islam, director general of national identity card wing at the Election Commission, told reporters at his office that they came to know of such issuance of NID to foreigners on Sunday.
‘We will form a committee in a couple of days to probe the incident and actions would be taken against persons responsible for it,’ he said.
