Family worried over Khaleda’s health

Family members who were allowed to meet the jailed Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital in Dhaka on Friday afternoon said that they were worried about the health of the former prime minister.

Six people, including Khaleda’s sister Selima Islam and her sister-in-law Nasrin Sayeed Iskandar met ailing Khaleda, at the hospital where she was undergoing treatment since April 1, BNP chairperson’s press wing member Shamsuddin Didar said.

He said BNP chairperson’s family members found her health deteriorating during the visit.

‘Her family members said that they were worried about her health as she cannot walk and even cannot take food on her own,’ Didar said.

The jail authority on Thursday gave the permission to visit Khaleda at the hospital.

Senior jail superintendent of the Dhaka Central Jail Iqbal Kabir Chowhdhury said 5-6 members of Khaleda’s family met her at the hospital in the afternoon.

About the delay in getting permission, inspector general of prisons Brigadier General AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha on Thursday told New Age that no visitor was allowed earlier this month as her sister, party leaders as well as MPs had filed several applications seeking to visit her.

Shamsuddin Didar said it was the jail authority’s common practice to delay the visit on various pretexts.

Didar said Khaleda’s family members were allowed to stay there for 1:30 hours from 3:15pm.

Khaleda’s relatives met her on August 30 for the last time.

The jail code allows relatives to meet a prisoner twice a month.

Khaleda was in jail since February 8, 2018 when she was convicted by a Dhaka special court in a graft case that BNP terms false and fabricated.
