2 Rohingyas killed in ‘gunfight’
Two more suspected Rohingya drug peddlers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in hilly Rangikhali area of Hnila union in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar early Saturday.
The victims —Noor Alam alias Noor Hafiz,30, son of Yar Mohammad, Mohammad Sohel,27, son of Sabbir Ahmed— were arrested by Rapid Action Battalion 7 along with two others on Friday. RAB had handed them over to Teknaf police on the same day for necessary steps after seizing 8.10 lakh Yaba tablets and six illegal fire arms and 70 cartridges from them.
They were living at Rangikhali for last four years, according to local police.
Teknaf police officer-in-charge Prodeep Kumar Das said police seized huge quantity of illegal firearms and Yaba pills but did not give any specific information.
With this, a total of 55 Rohigyas including women were killed in ‘gunfights’ with law enforcement agencies since January 1 as various charges were brought against them.
According to the Teknaf police, a team of the Teknaf police went to Rangikhali hilly area for recovering arms and Yaba with arrested Noor Alam alias Noor Hafiz and Mohammad Sohel.
But associates of drug paddlers opened fire at police forcing them to retaliate ‘to save their lives and government property’, police said.
Suspected drug paddlers managed to flee from spot, but police later found bodies of arrested Noor Alam and Mohammad Sohel at the spot along with illegal firearms and yaba pills.
Teknaf police said Noor Alam alias Noor Hafiz and Mohammad Sohel were Myanmar citizens and were suspected members of Rohingya robber gang led by Abdul Hakim.
Teknaf police sent bodies to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed with Teknaf police station in this connection.
