2 YEARS OF KHALEDA’S JAIL BNP claims getting rally permission, DMP denies
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders on Friday said that they got permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to hold a rally in front the party’s central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka marking two years of Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment.
On February 4, the party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that it would hold a rally in Dhaka city and stage demonstrations across the country on Saturday marking two years of the party chairperson’s imprisonment.
The DMP’s Mothijheel division deputy commissioner Jamil Hasan on Friday evening said that the DMP headquarters usually gave them permission for this type of rally and ‘We just maintain law and order on instruction. But, so far we received no written instruction’.
But, a senior DMP official said BNP was given verbal permission to hold the rally.
But, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, publicity affairs secretary of BNP, said they have received verbal permission from the DMP and no restriction was given in written.
‘We will hold the rally in front our Naya Paltan party office,’ said the BNP leader.
Khaleda has been in jail since February 8, 2018 after a special court jailed her in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. Later, she was convicted in another graft case.
She was later moved to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital.
According to a report of BSMMU, Khaleda Zia was in a ‘crippled state’ and ‘largely dependent on assistance for her day-to-day activities’.
The BSMMU submitted the report to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on December 11, 2019 and the next day the Appellate Division rejected a bail petition by Khaleda Zia.
