BSMMU submits report on Khaleda’s treatment

The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University vice-chancellor on Wednesday submitted a sealed report to the Supreme Court registrar general on whether Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia was being given ‘advanced biological treatment’ as per the directive of the Appellate Division.

On Sunday, the High Court bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq while hearing Khaleda’s new bail application asked the vice-chancellor to submit the report.

The hearing is scheduled for today to resume.

Khaleda’s lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain told reporters that the medical board needed consent from the former prime minister before providing her with ‘advanced biological treatment’ having side effects.

He said that he did not know whether Khaleda gave her consent to such treatment, a new therapy in the country in which vaccines needed to be injected.

He said that Khaleda might doubt the medical board’s capacity to control side effects of the new treatment.

He said that Khaleda needed bail on humanitarian ground for her immediate advanced treatment in the United Kingdom as she was seriously sick.

Khandaker Mahbub said that recently a ruling party leader was sent abroad for advancement treatment while he was being treated by the medical university.

He said that the attorney general was vehemently opposing bail to Khaleda although the government on various occasion said that it was the court to decide whether or not she would be granted bail.

‘Can I tell the court to grant her bail,’ attorney general Mahbubey Alam told reporters adding, ‘It is the duty of her lawyers to satisfy the court by placing evidence that she deserves bail.’

He said that if Khaleda applied for releasing her on parole for treatment abroad, the government would consider it but she did not apply.

On February 18, Khaleda filed the new bail petition amid conflicting political statements by leaders of the ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP over her release.

On February 23, Khaleda’s lawyers prayed for the High Court’s directive to the BSMMU vice-chancellor to submit the latest medical report about Khaleda’s health condition for properly adjudicating her bail application.

Khaleda was shifted to the BSMMU hospital on April 1, 2019 for better treatment.

Since then her treatment has been going on but her health has not been improving, they told the court.

They submitted that she was now seriously ill and could not move without support from others.

She cannot take food and even cannot take medicine without the help of others, they added.

They said that she had been in jail since February 8, 2018, the day when she was sentenced by a special court in Dhaka in a graft case which the BNP terms as false and fabricated.
