BNP for nat’l unity to tackle coronavirus situation

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday called for forging national unity to tackle coronavirus situation in the country.

Addressing a news briefing after the party standing committee meeting at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that his party thought that the coronavirus infection was a national disaster.

He asked all the people, irrespective of their political identity, ethnicity and religion, to tackle the situation without being panicked.

‘We should do whatever we need to fight this. We clearly want to say the world catastrophe will have to be tackled through national unity,’ he said.

He requested the people to remain aware of the infection and create awareness. ‘We urge the people, especially those living in villages, to stay at home.’

The government should request people to go to home quarantine, he said.

He called on businessmen not to increase prices of essential commodities.

He blamed the government for its failure to tackle the situation as it had no prior preparations.

Fakhrul said that the whole Dhaka city had become empty due to coronavirus panic and the low-income group people were badly affected in the situation.

He said that the government should provide allowance to the low income group people during this crisis.

‘If the government does not take such measures and the situation continues for one more month, there might be a famine like situation. Because, common people will not get food,’ he said, mentioning the price hike of different daily essential commodities.

Regarding the by-polls to three constituencies – Dhaka-10, Gaibandha-3 and Bagerhat-4, he said that not even two per cent votes were cast and the BNP agents were ousted from polling centres.

The BNP leader demanded cancellation of the election results and to hold re-elections there.

He criticised the Election Commission for this situation by holding elections amid coronavirus fear while BNP and different quarters demanded not to hold the election in such a situation.
