Khaleda’s home quarantine to continue: Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said that the party’s chairperson Khaleda Zia would remain in home quarantine until improving the coronavirus situation.

The BNP leader told this to journalists in a teleconference when Khaleda’s 14-day home quarantine ends.

‘The situation of coronavirus infection is serious across the world. The situation is deteriorating day by day. A lockdown like situation is prevailing in Bangladesh. Under this situation she (Khaleda) will have to remain in quarantine. She is safe there,’ he said.

‘We will think about the next step when the situation would improve,’ he said.

He said that Khaleda was still badly ill and did not improve so much.

‘We demanded that she would be allowed to go abroad for better treatment. But, unfortunately, they (government) did not allow it,’ he said.

He said that Khaleda’s personal specialist physicians had been providing treatment to her at present.

In a separate teleconference, Khaleda’s personal medical team member and BNP’s vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain said that Khaleda’s treatment was coordinated by her eldest daughter-in-law Zubaida Rahman from London.

He said that as her 14-day home quarantine ended, her family members would be allowed to meet her keeping social distance.

Zahid, also a former president of BNP-backed physicians’ organisation Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh, said that Khaleda’s health deteriorated seriously as she was kept in isolated jail for over two years.

‘She has been suffering from serious pain due to her arthritis. She was receiving physiotherapy for getting relief from the pain,’ he said.

He said that her diabetes was yet to be controlled and she would need long term advanced treatment for complete recovery.
