Dhaka University student picked up by ‘DB police’
A Dhaka University master’s student remained missing after a group of people identifying themselves as Detective Branch members picked him up from his village home at Moheshkhali upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.
The missing student, Redwan Farhad, is a student of the Arabic department at the university, the family said, adding that he recently joined an NGO working on family planning as a part-timer.
Momtaz Begum, mother of the missing student, said her son reached home at Yunuskhali of Kalarmarchhara union at about 10:00am on Friday from Dhaka.
A team of eight people with a small weapon raided their house and took away Momtaz Begum’s son at about 4:00pm.
The family members said that the ‘DB personnel’ did not explain the reason for Redwan’s ‘arrest’ but seized the mobile phones of his parents and his laptop.
They were in plainclothes, said the family members, who were present during the incident.
His family members said his parents followed the ‘DB personnel’ and saw Farhad was taken to a police box where the parents found him lying on the ground on the first floor and was guarded by two police personnel in uniform. Montaz was barred from meeting her son despite repeated cries, she said.
‘From that point on, we are unaware of the whereabouts of Farhad,’ his mother said. The family members alleged they attempted to file a missing complaint with Moheshkhali police station thrice but the police did not receive it.
Moheshkhali police station officer-in-charge Didarul Ferdous said that he was not aware of any such incident and none approached him with any complaint.
Until Sunday evening, the Cox’s Bazar district DB’s officer-in-charge Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman said that they did not arrest anyone from this location.
Bangladesh Student Rights Council expressed its concern over the incident.
‘We are concerned as in the past many people went missing after they were picked up by people who claimed to be DB or plainclothes police officers,’ said joint convener of the council Muhammad Rashed Khan.
