ABRAR MURDER Defendants’ plea to move case from speedy trial court rejected
The High Court on Monday rejected a prayer, filed by 22 people accused of murdering Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad, for transferring the case from the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 saying that they might not get justice from the tribunal.
The online vacation bench of Judge FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Judge Shahed Nuruddin rejected the prayer.
The rejection of the prayer of the accused paved the way for the speedy trial tribunal-1 to record deposition of 40th prosecution witnesses on Tuesday in the sensational murder case.
Petitioners’ lawyer Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury told New Age that there was no bar for holding trial of the case as the accused would not move to any other high court bench regarding the issue.
He said that all of the 22 accused showed no-confidence in the tribunal judge, Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman, as he rejected their prayers on December 3 to summon doctor Masum Elahi, who was a witness of the case, and record his deposition again.
A total of 39 out of 60 prosecution witnesses have already given their depositions.
attorney general AM Amin Uddin opposed the prayer for transferring the case.
Abrar, 21, a second-year student of BUET electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death by some leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 7, 2019.
Abrar’s father filed the murder case with Chawkbazar police station in Dhaka against 19 BCL leaders and activists on the following day.
