Bangladesh's ex-PM Khaleda now suffering from fever

Bangladesh’s former prime minister and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, now taking treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka for post-Covid complications, has caught fever.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir revealed the information while responding to reporters at a press briefing at the party chairperson’s office at Gulshan in Dhaka on Friday morning.

The 74-year-old party chief has been suffering from fever since Thursday and the doctors of her medical board are observing her health condition in the hospital, said Fakhrul.

He said that Khaleda was suffering from multiple health conditions, including post-Covid complications, and had passed a month in hospital.

Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital since April 28. She was shifted to the hospital’s coronary care unit on May 16.

The 10-member medical team has submitted recommendations to Khaleda’s family twice to take steps for long-term advanced treatment for her in a hospital having advanced facilities.

Khaleda tested positive for Covid-19 on April 11 and negative on May 5.

On May 5 the BNP chairperson’s younger brother Shamim Eskander submitted an application to home minister Asaduzzaman Khan seeking permission to send her abroad for better treatment.

On May 9 the home minister told reporters that the government had rejected the application as Khaleda was a convict, adding that there was no instance of allowing a convict to go abroad for treatment.

A court in Dhaka convicted Khaleda in a graft case on February 8, 2018 and sent her to jail the same day.

The ex-PM was released from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University’s prison cell on March 25, 2020 on an executive order on conditions that she would take medical treatment at home and would not leave the country.
