HC orders lower court to end Nazmul Huda’s trial in 6 months
The High Court on Tuesday rejected former communication minister Nazmul Huda’s petition to cancel trial proceedings of a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission against him on January 19, 2020 for filing a false bribery case against former chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on June 18, 2018.
A bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo also directed the Dhaka Special Court-9 to complete the trial proceeding in the case against Nazmul Huda within six months.
Nazmul Huda, a lawyer by profession, in his case alleged that the Appellate Division’s bench led by SK Sinha, earlier on March 7, 2017 in an open court verdict upheld a High Court judgment that on March 23, 2016, quashed the trial proceedings of the bribery case.
He alleged that the Appellate Division in written judgement, which was penned by SK Sinha, ordered his trial of the bribery case after rejecting the High Court’ verdict.
Nazmul Huda, also alleged that the then chief justice SK Sinha calling him at his chamber on July 20, 2017 demanded Tk 3.25 crore as bribe to clear him and his wife Sigma Huda, also a lawyer, of the charges of taking bribes brought against the couple during the army-led caretaker government regime in 2008.
Huda alleged that as he did not pay Sinha the bribe, the Appellate Division led by Sinha ordered trial of Huda and Sigma following an appeal filed by the ACC challenging the High Court judgement.
In December 2019, the ACC filed the final report giving clean chit to SK Sinha as it was proved to be a false allegation.
The ACC had also approved the filing of a case against Nazmul for lodging a false case against Sinha.
