Work to raise people’s purchasing power
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday urged the private sector to work for boosting productivity in mills and factories which will ultimately increase the purchasing power of common people.
‘Boosting productivity in mills and factories and enhancing the work efficiency of people are not enough. You’ll also have to give attention to increasing the purchasing capacity of people to take the country forward further,’ she said.
The prime minister came up with the view when Bankers Association of Bangladesh handed over cheques to the prime minister at her official residence Ganobhanan for her relief and welfare Fund.
PM’s deputy press secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan said the chairmen and managing directors of 34 private sector banks under the BAB handed over cheques for donation to the prime minister’s relief and welfare fund.
‘If the private sector can work together with the government, there’ ll be no difficulty for us in taking the country forward,’ Hasina said.
She said financial assistance from the her fund has been provided to Rana Plaza and Tazreen garment factory victims as well as others who fell victims to BNP-Jamaat’s terrorist activities.
The prime minister also urged the private sector to spend more on their corporate social responsibility programme. ‘The underprivileged segment of society will ultimately benefit from it.’
Hasina urged all to be more sympathetic towards the people with disability, saying that her government would appoint area-based psychologists for the counseling of children with disabilities.
Turning to her education assistance trust fund, the prime minister said stipends are being provided from the fund for a large number of students across the country.
She urged the well-off section of society, including the private sector, to contribute to the midday meal programme of the government, saying that it will help reduce the dropout of students.
The BAB leaders thanked the prime minister for the withdrawal of a total of five percent corporate tax from banks.
They earlier congratulated the prime minister by presenting bouquets on receiving the world’s highest environmental accolade – ‘The Champions of the Earth Award’ and ‘ICT Sustainable Development Award’.
The BAB leaders also cut a cake on the occasion.
