Ershad bemoans ‘lack of democracy’
Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Saturday bemoaned that democracy for which he had quit power is now in sorry state that no one can dare write or say anything against the government.
‘What kind of democracy is there in the country now? Who has the courage to write against the government?’ he questioned.
Ershad, also the prime minister’s special envoy, came up with the remarks while speaking at the council of Jatiya Party’s Dhaka north city unit at the city’s Krishibid institute.
The Jatiya Party chief came down hard on BNP saying it is now paying dearly for its repressive acts carried out in the past.
Ershad said though BNP is now want to engage in talks, there is no atmosphere to hold dialogue with the party. ‘BNP has no quality to hold dialogue. No one join hands with the powerless.’
He said his party has target to win the next election and form government. ‘I’m getting huge response wherever I’m going. If you love me and support the party, no one will be able to put obstacles to the path of Jatiya Party.’
The former military ruler said he is now reorganising his party to contest the next election independently.
