Teachers’ role important to end corporal punishment
A former adviser to a caretaker government Rashida K Chowdhury has said teachers’ positive role is important to reduce corporal punishment of schoolchildren.
She said this while presiding over a roundtable on ‘Ending Corporal Punishment’ organised by Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust on Sunday in the capital.
Rashida, also director of Campaign for Popular Education executive, said corporal punishment should be made socially unacceptable.
BLAST honorary executive director Sara Hossain recommended that the government repeal specific sections of the whipping act, the railways act, the cantonments pure food act, the prison act, the borstal schools act that authorise whipping and corporal punishment.
She also recommended holding consultations with relevant stakeholders at divisional and national level on the education act to incorporate clear prohibitions on corporal punishment in educational institutions.
Primary and mass education minister Mostafizur Rahman stressed creating awareness of corporal punishment among the family members of school going children in line with the society practices and culture.
National Human Rights Commission’s complaint and inquiry director Shorif Uddin, law ministry official Ariful Kaise Rasel and Save the Children’s adviser Habibur Rahman also spoke.
