2 ‘robbers’ killed in Sunderbans ‘gunfight’
Two suspected robbers were killed in a reported gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion in the Sunderbans in Mongla of Bagerhat on Monday morning.
The deceased were identified as Kashem alias Akash, 40, ringleader of the forest robber gang ‘Akash Bahini’ and a resident of Sarankhola and its second-in-command Farid alias Maijhya, 45, of Rampal in the district, United News of Bangladesh reports.
Commander of RAB-8 (Barisal) Lieutenant Colonel Faridul Alam said tipped off that a gang of forest robbers were taking preparation to commit a robbery in Tambulbunia Khal area under Chandpai Range of the mangrove forest, a team of the battalion conducted a drive there around 7:15am.
As the battalion men approached there, the robbers opened fire on them forcing them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
After the gunfight that continued for 30 minutes, the robbers fled into the deep forest.
The RAB personnel recovered the bodies of Akash and Farid from the spot.
They also recovered 17 firearms and 450 bullets from the spot.
