Security tightened on New Year’s eve

The police, especially Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Rapid Action Battalion, have boosted up security and put restrictions at important places in a bid to ward off any untoward incident on the eve of the New Year keeping in mind the recent attacks.
The police tightened security following a tip-off by intelligence agencies while security was reorganised at five-star hotels, churches, and other crowded places in the capital.
No untoward incident was reported until 10:00pm on Thursday.
‘We keep up our vigilance to ensure smooth celebrations of New Year,’ said DMP deputy commissioner (media and public relations) Maruf Hossain Sorder.
Elaborate security and traffic arrangements were made to ensure that celebrations are held peacefully as people are expected to throng TSC intersection at Dhaka University,
the centre of celebrations in the city, and other popular spots including Hatirjheel Lake, Gulshan and Uttara.
The police said barricades have already been set up to check drunken driving and stunt biking as well.
The police restricted entry into TSC area after 8:00pm on December 31 to prevent overcrowding of the popular celebration point.
The RAB deputy director (media) Rumman Mahmud said they continued their vigilance focusing on the crowded area and diplomatic zone.
DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah Minto had announced increased security measures for December 31, including a prohibition on outdoor parties after 8:00pm and increased checkpoints in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara
and the Dhaka University of areas.
Australia, Canada, the UK and the US have warned their nationals about ‘possible attacks’
against hotels and clubs potentially in connection with New Year’s Eve celebrations.
