Police intercept nurses’ march towards PMO
Police intercepted a procession of unemployed nurses on their way to the Prime Minister’s Office in the city on Wednesday to realise their demand for appointing nurses based on their seniority, passing out batches and intelligence.
Several hundreds of nurses under the joint banner of Bangladesh Diploma Bekar (unemployed) Nurses’ Association and Bangladesh Basic Graduate Nurses’ Society began their march from the Central Shaheed Minar to PMO when they were waylaid by police in front of National Museum at Shahbagh intersection.
Later, the nurses announced that they would march toward the residence of health minister Mohammed Nasim on Thursday, wearing shrouds.
The secretary general of the nurses’ society, Nahida Akter, said that the health minister on May 1 had assured them of realising their demand. But, nothing followed.
‘And that’s why we were marching toward PMO to meet prime minister Sheikh Hasina,’ she continued.
‘If our demand is not met, we’ll go for tougher actions,’ Nahida Akter added.
The nurses began their movement on April 4 under the joint banner. They staged non-stop sit-in programme followed by fasting unto death, for days.
Prior to the movement, they had begun their protest on March 30, two days after the Public Service Commission had published an advertisement to appoint 3,616 senior staff nurses through recruitment examinations, an unprecedented system to appoint nurses in the country, nurses said.
