Mujahidul Islam Selim (born 16 April 1948) is a Bangladeshi politician who is the President of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) a Marxist–Leninist political party in this country. He was elected the first Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) in post-independence Bangladesh.
Selim’s full name was Mujahidul Islam Khan Selim. Going to protest against Ayub Khan, he dropped the word 'Khan' from his name. From then on he became Comrade Mujahidul Islam Selim.
Selim was born in Savar, not far from Dhaka. His father Mosleh Uddin Khan was a government official and mother Umme Hani Khanam was a woman leader and social worker. In school life he was involved in various social activities including scouts. Selim was imprisoned in 1967 while he was a schoolboy in a procession against Auzub Khan. He got actively involved in the leftist student movement and politics while in college. During this time he also secretly joined the Communist Party. He was the general secretary and president of the central committee of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union. He became a member of this secret party during the mass uprising of 1969. He did Honors and Masters in Economics from Dhaka University in 1972.
Selim left the campus with weapons of University of Dhaka in the second week of March 1971 and paraded on the main roads of Dhaka. Thus he led the exercise of armed resistance. On the black night of March 25, a resistance war was formed at Dhaka University under the leadership of Selim. He was the Operations Commander in the Eastern Sector with the first batch of training from India. He served as the commander of the joint guerrilla forces during the war of liberation which one was formed by the NAP-Communist Party-Student Union.
Selim held the first procession after killing Bangabandhu and his family on 15 August 1975. He held a procession on the campus of Dhaka University on the same day.
At the end of his student life, Selim chose party life and went from village to village concentrating on organizing the farm laborers. He was the founding general secretary and later the president of Bangladesh Khetmajur Samiti. Selim has been the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh-CPB since the early nineties of the last century. Later in 2012, he was elected President of the party's 10th Congress. The leader was imprisoned for about eight years for political reasons.
Author of various books including 'Rajnitir Nana Prasanga (Politics in Various Contexts)', 'Marksbad Eakti Chirayata Darshan (Marxism is an Eternal Philosophy)', 'Bikalper Kono Bikalpa Nei (There is no Alternative)'. He is also writing columns in various newspapers in the midst of politics.
Selim also performed on stage. In 1955, he was a regular performer of the children's program 'Khelaghor' on the then Pakistan Radio. He has also acted in a movie named ‘Asiya’ was released on 1960.
