Golam Dastagir Gazi, Birpatik (born 06 August 1948) is a Bangladeshi Industrialist, Politician, incumbent State Minister and Member of Parliament representing Narayanganj-1 constituency. He was elected from Narayanganj-1 in the Nineth, Tenth and Eleventh Parliament election. He is the current Minister of Textiles & Jute since 7th January 2019.
Gazi was born in a well-respected family in Narayanganj district. His father's name is Golam Kibria Gazi and mother's name is Samsunnesa Begum. His formal education began at an institution in old Dhaka. After completing SSC, he took admission in the Notre Dame College of Dhaka. Later he obtained his B.Sc Degree from Jagannath College of Dhaka in 1968. As an activist of Chattra League, he was active in the six-point movement and the mass uprising of the 1969. He made a heroic contribution by participating in the liberation war of Bangladesh.
Gazi has long been associated with several movement such as, 6 point movement, mass uprising of 1969, election of 70, and liberation war of 1971. As a grassroot leader of Narayanganj-1constituency he worked hard to organize the Awami League as the main political party of that area.
Gazi participated heroically in Sector 2 in the Liberation War. As a fighter of the famous ‘crack platoon’, he bravely participated in various front wars. In recognition of his heroic contribution to the War of Liberation, the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh honored him with a heroic title ‘Birprotik’.
While in politics after independence, Gazi used his intelligence, innovative thinking and dexterity to reconstruct the infrastructure of the war-torn country. In1974, he established a factory of plastic and rubber products, keeping in view the needs of the country and advancing the industrial sector of the country. Inspired by the ideals of Bangabandhu, he has been working for the economic liberation of people of the country.
In the first election of Dhaka City Corporation in 1977, Gazi was elected Awami League's nominee commissioner from Kakrail-Siddheshwari-Mailbag-Mouchak- Eskaton-Moghbazar area. He won citizens’ heart of that area by dint of his selfless social works. Later he actively started working in several social and political activities of Rupganj area of Narayanganj, his ancestral land.
In the 9th National Parliamentary Election of 2008, he was elected as Member of Parliament from Narayanganj-1(Rupganj) constituency with a huge mandate. To show his commitment to the electoral of that area he took a huge number of development works and implemented accordingly within the stipulated time. He has solemnly maintained all those pledges he made to the common people of Rupganj. Beyond being a successful businessman and politician, he is widely known as a social worker and a prominent sports sponsor and sports fan in Bangladesh.
Gazi was elected consecutively from the same constituency in the 10th National Parliamentary Election in 2014 and in the 11th National Parliamentary Election in 2018. He also has served as a member in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Finance Ministry of the 9th Parliament, in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Liberation Affairs and Parliamentary Standing Committee on Government Accounts in the 10th Parliament.
Gazi was awarded the title of 'Atish Dipankar' for his role in social work. He was the tenth highest taxpayer in the tax year 2012-13, the third highest taxpayer in the tax year 2013-14, the eight highest taxpayer in the tax year 2014-15, the third highest taxpayer in the tax year 2015-16, and the second highest taxpayer in the senior citizen category in the tax year 2016-17 and the first highest taxpayer in the tax year 2017-18.
On January 7, 2019, under the leadership of Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he was sworn in as the Minister of the Government of Bangladesh and took charge of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute on 8 January 2019.
Gazi is the chairman of the Ghazi group. He has served as the chairperson of Bangladesh China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bangladesh Tire-tube Manufacturer and Exporters Association, Mariners Club, Vice-President of Bangladesh Cricket Board. He also served as the Director of the Bangladesh Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. He was the former chairman of Jamuna Bank Ltd. Besides, he is the owner of private satellite television GTV, online news portal sarabangla.com and the daily Sarabangla.
Gazi is the avid supporter of the proliferation of education among the marginalized people. Hasina Ghazi High School in a remote area under Jamalpur district was established by his support. As a chairman of Governing Body he is working hard to improve the quality of education of Murapara Degree College, Rupshi Model School and College, Bhulta School and College, Janata School and Colleges.
Gazi’s wife, Hasina Gazi is currently serving as the Mayor of Tarabo Municipality of Narayanganj. She is also involved in various social development activities. He has two sons. In his personal life, he likes sports especially cricket, football, hadudu, archery and shooting. He has a special interest in cultural activities such as songs, jatrapala and plays; and also practicing and preserving national heritage. He also has a passion for playing musical instruments such as guitar and harmonium.
