Professor Dr. Abu Sayeed (born 01 November 1945) is a Bangladeshi Politician, Organizer of the War of Liberation, former State Minister and former Member of Parliament representing Pabna-8 and Pabna-1 constituencies. Sayeed was a member of the then Pakistan National Assembly in 1970. He was part of the 34-member committee formed in 1972 to formulate the draft Constitution of Bangladesh. He was designated as the governor of Pabna district by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s BAKSAL government in 1975.
Sayeed was born in the village of Brishalikha in Bera upazila of Pabna district. He was a teacher at Rajshahi University and the Vice President (VP) of Rajshehi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU). He was an advisor and camp in-charge in Sector 7 of the Liberation War in 1971.
Sayeed was elected Member of Parliament from Pabna-1 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 7th Parliamentary Election of 12 June 1996. He served as the Minister of State for Information in the Seventh National Assembly of Bangladesh from 6 June 1996 until 15 July 2001.
Sayeed was defeated in the 5th Jatiya Sangsad elections of 1991 as a candidate of BAKSAL, in the 8th Jatiya Sangsad elections of 2001 as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League, in the 10th Jatiya Sangsad elections of 2014 as an independent candidate and in the Eleventh Jatiya Sangsad elections of 2016 as a Gonoforum candidate contesting from Pabna-1 constituency.
Sayeed has been known for his criticism of the military government. In 2013, Sayeed was conferred a PhD degree by Rajshahi University for his thesis titled "Independence of Bangladesh: A Diplomatic War".
Sayeed became known as a reformist within the party during 1/11 in 2006-07. After that he was cornered in the party and became inactive in politics.
