Sheikh Shahidul Islam (born 29 September 1948) is a Bangladeshi academician, politician, former minister and former Member of Parliament represented Madaripur-3 constituency. He was twice elected as a Member of Parliament from the same as a Jatiya Party candidate in 1986, and served as Minister for Education, Public Works, Youth and Sports from 1989 to 1990. Since 2008 he is the Secretary General of the Jatiya Party fraction lead by Anwar Hossain Manju named Jatiya Party (JP).

Islam was born in Tungipara of Gopalganj district. His father Sheikh Mohammad Musa, a prominent academic and social worker and mother Jennatun Nesha. Begum Fazilatunnessa was his aunt and the first president of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was his uncle. The current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is his cousin.

Islam entered in politics by participating the education movement in 1962. He took active part in the six-point movement, 11-point movement in 1969, mass uprising and liberation war in 1971. During the war of liberation he was the chief of the Mujib Bahini in the greater Faridpur region. He was the President of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Central Social Welfare Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, President of Jatiya Jubo Sanghati and Presidium Member of Jatiya Party. In 1975 he headed the Jatiya Chhatra League, the student front, of the BAKSAL government of Bangladesh.

During the Ershad government, Islam was the first to introduce free education for women in Bangladesh. He also founded the Bangladesh National University and introduce Private University concept in Bangladesh.
