Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh (born 19 November 1971) is a Bangladeshi lawyer and Bangladesh Awami League politician who is serving as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). He was elected as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation on 1 February 2020. Earlier, he served as a Member of Parliament for the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh National Parliament for Dhaka-10 and Dhaka-12 from the Bangladesh Awami League. He resigned from the Eleventh Parliament after being nominated as the Awami League's mayoral candidate in the Dhaka South City Corporation election on December 29, 2019.
Taposh was born in Dhaka. His father's name was Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni and mother's name was Arju Moni. His parents were both assassinated on 15 August 1975 in a military coup that also killed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other members of his family. Taposh and his elder brother survived. He graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom in 1996 with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). In 1997, he completed the Bar Final Course under the General Council of the Bar of England and Wales. He is a member of Lincoln's Inn and Bangladesh Bar Council.
Taposh has been working as a lawyer in the High Court Division since 2001. He was appointed as a lawyer in the Appellate Division on August 24, 2010. He worked as a lawyer for the government in the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case. In 2007, the army-backed caretaker government filed a case against Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. Taposh handled the case on behalf of Sheikh Hasina. He served as the Member Secretary of Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad. From 1998 to 2001, he was the publisher of his father's established and closed daily Banglar Bani. He is a member of Dhaka University Senate.
Taposh was elected a Member of Parliament for the first time in the Ninth Parliamentary Election in 2008 from Dhaka-12 constituency on the nomination of Bangladesh Awami League. During this time he served as a member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources and as a member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in the Parliament. He was later elected Member of Parliament from Dhaka-10 constituency in the 10th National Assembly elections in 2014 and in the Eleventh Parliamentary Elections on 30 December 2018. In the 10th Parliament, he was a member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Food.
Taposh resigned from the Jatiya Sangsad after being nominated as the Awami League's mayoral candidate in the Dhaka South City Corporation election on December 29, 2019. He won the city corporation election on February 1, 2020, and was sworn in as mayor on May 16.
Taposh' father Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was a politician of Awami League and its affiliate Bangladesh Awami Juba League was established by him. Sheikh Moni is the nephew of former President of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Besides, the guerrilla forces `Mujib's forces` of the Bangladesh War of Independence, were formed and managed under his direction and direct supervision. Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni and Arju Moni were killed during the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the grandfather of Taposh and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina is his uncle. Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim is also Taposh's uncle.
