Shahedul Islam Helal (born 09 April 1953) is a Bangladeshi businessman and Industrialist. Currently he is carrying out his responsibilities as the President of the Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association. He is also the former Chairman of the Bangladesh Jute Goods Association.
Helal was born in a respected Muslim family in Dhaka. He completed his SSC and HSC from Mirzapur Cadet College from 1965 to 1972. Then he moved to Australia for higher education and completed Accountancy and Company Law from Ebbels School of Accountancy, Melbourne, Australia in the year 1978 and became Chartered Secretary from the Institute of Chartered Secretary and Administrators, Melbourne, Australia.
Helal started his career as businessman in 1983 and within a very short span of time he did very well in business. He is a Managing Director of Bengal Pacific (Pvt.) Ltd. (manufacturer and exporter of plastic films), Bengal Braided Rugs Ltd. (manufacturer and exporter of jute floor coverings) and Bay Asset Management Ltd. (an asset management company). Alongside his businesses, he is the former President of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI). For his outstanding contribution in the industrial sector he was awarded CIP (Commercially Important Person) 2009 by the present government.
Helal is the pioneer of the campaign “Amar Ponnyo Amar Desh”, a campaign organized by the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries to motivate Bangladeshis to use Bangladeshi goods and services. He believes business houses need to motivate Bangladeshis to favour Bangladeshi products as there is a huge local market for consumer items. Under the World Free Trade Agreement, our government will not be able to protect our industries through tax measures and thus it is imperative that people of Bangladesh use locally made products as much as possible rather than depending on imports. This in turn will save our hard-earned foreign currency, create more employment in the long run and help in export growth.
Helal is the Chairman of Promises Medical Limited, a center for de-addiction and depression. He is the President of the Bangladesh Backward Linkage Association. He was the Member of the Board of Investment (BOI), President of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI), Chairman of the Bangladesh Jute Goods Association (BJGA), President of the Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA), Director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI), Director of the SME Foundation. He was a member of Bangladesh Country Coordinating Mechanism (BCCM) – a national body mandated by the global fund.
Helal has sound experience in the banking and financial sectors of Bangladesh. He was a Director of the Oriental Bank Limited and was the Managing Director of the Alliance Securities Limited (a stock brokerage house). He currently an independent director of Trust bank limited and Desh General Insurance limited.
