A K Azad Chowdhury (born 21 October 1946) is a Bangladeshi academic, administrator and intellectual. He served as the 23rd Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka from September 1996 to November 2001 and the 11th Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh from May 2011 to May 2015. He is a member of the advisory council of Bangladesh Awami League.
Chowdhury was born in Feni district. His father’s name was Siddiqur Rahman Chowdhury and mother’s name was Anwara Begum Chowdhury. He completed his bachelor's and master's in bio-chemistry from the University of Dhaka in 1967 and 1968 respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the University of Manchester in 1976. He completed postdoctoral research at the University of Nottingham.
From 1983 to 1986 Chowdhury was the Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy, Dhaka University. He was promoted to the post of Professor in 1985. From 1995 to 1997, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy. He was also the Senate (1988-1992 and 1993-1996) and the Syndicate (1982-1985 and 1993-1996) member of Dhaka University.
Chowdhury was a member of Drug Policy Committee of Harvard University, National Professor of Canam University of Paris, and Visiting Professor Nottingham University, UK. He has been elected Chairman of the Governing Body of New Delhi-based South Asian University.
In 2018, Chowdhury was included in the Queen's New Year's Honours list, receiving an MBE for services to Education in Bangladesh.
