Azam J Chowdhury (born 31 October 1954) is an elite industrialist and entrepreneur in Bangladesh. His full name is Azam Jahangir Chowdhury. He is the Chairman and owner of East Coast Group. In addition, he is the Chairman of The Consolidated Tea & Lands Company Bangladesh Limited (formerly, James Finlay Limited) and also the Chairman of Prime Bank Limited, a private sector leading commercial bank. Chowdhury is also the Managing Director of MJL Bangladesh Limited, Distributor of Exxon Mobil Corporation in Bangladesh. He was president of Bangladesh Association of public listed companies for two term of 4 years. Currently he is president of LPG operators Association. He is the honorary consul of Hungary in Bangladesh.
Chowdhury was born in Hossainpur village of Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar district into a middle-class family. He spent his childhood in Kulaura upazila. He passed SSC from Navin Chandra High School in Kulaura and got admission in Sylhet MC College. Later he did his Honors and Masters in English literature from Dhaka University and in 1981 he started his own business. He has completed additional courses on Business Administration in UK and Singapore and also a course in Pricing and Costing sponsored by UNCTAD under United Nations.
In the past Chowdhury also served as the Chairman of Green Delta Insurance Company Limited (2001-2005), one of the most successful general insurance companies in Bangladesh. He is also the Director of Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) and a former Member of the Executive Committee of Bangladesh Association of Publicly Listed Companies (BAPLC).
Chowdhury is the Director of Omera Petroleum Ltd. one of the largest LPG operators of the country. He is also the Director of Omera Cylinders Ltd. & Omera Fuels Ltd.
Chowdhury is the President of Bangladesh Energy Companies Association (BECA) and Vice-President of LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh. He is a Member of Advisory Council of Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on Power, Energy & Mineral Resources. He is the President of Bangladesh Ocean Going Ship Owner’s Association (BOGSOA).
In recognition to his performance, The Hungarian Government nominated him as the Honorary Consul of Hungary in Bangladesh.
He is a renowned Golfer and achieved laurels several times in this sporting arena.
