Asif Nazrul (born 12 January 1966) is a Bangladeshi writer, novelist, political analyst, constitutional expert and columnist. By profession, he is a professor in the law department of Dhaka University. His birth name is Md. Nazrul Islam. He is a very talented, principled and courageous person and a writer and political analyst who is very popular among the present young generation. He is particularly known for his bold political analysis on TV talk shows and in his columns. He is the author of more than ten books.
Asif was born in a middle class family in Lalbagh, Dhaka. His father was a government officer. He was the middle son among six brothers and sisters. He loved to read books since childhood. He passed SSC in first division from Western School in 1980 at the age of 15 and stood 10th in merit list in humanities. After passing HSC, he was admitted to the law department of Dhaka University. Asif completed his graduation in 1986 and post-graduation in 1987 from the Department of Law of Dhaka University. In 1999, he completed his PhD from SOUS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London. He later received a postdoctoral fellowship from the Environmental Law Center in Bonn, Germany. He has served as a Commonwealth Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies.
Before joining Dhaka University as a teacher, Asif worked in Bichitra, a widely circulated weekly newspaper in 1991. He worked for some time as a Government Officer (Magistrate) in the Government of Bangladesh. He is often seen in various national and international media like BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera etc. He worked as a Consultant to European Union Delegation in Bangladesh, UNDP, ADB, DANIDA, SIDA, CARE, TIB and other organizations on issues of good governance, access to justice, rule of law, environmental issues and human rights.
Asif wrote a number of book chapters and research papers on constitutional, international legal issues in leading journals and books published including by Kluwer, Routledge, Brill, Nijhoff and Oxford University Press. He presented papers in conferences held in USA, Europe and South Asia on constitutional reform, election integrity and good governance issues. He was a Bureau Member of the South Asian for Human Rights from 2011-17. His book in international watercourse law is due to be published by the UPL.
