Shahidul Islam (born 1951) is a Bangladeshi politician, a Heroic Freedom Fighter, and former Member of Parliament represented Kushtia 2 (Bheramara-Mirpur) constituency. He was elected Member of Parliament in the sixth, seventh and eighth parliamentary elections. He was known for filing cases and attacking journalists in Kushtia District.
Islam was born in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia district. His political career began in 1967 by joining the Chhatra League. Islam starts his career as a lecturer of Bheramara College. He joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1980s. He is the former president of Kushtia District BNP and a member of the National Executive Committee BNP.
Islam was criticized for various reasons during the BNP regime. On May 29, 2006, he was widely criticized at home and abroad for attacking the rally against torture of journalists in Kushtia Public Library grounds. At least 30 journalists were injured in that attack, including prime minister’s former information adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Omar Farooq, Al-Mamun Sagar.
