Dr. Habibul Haque Khondker (born 04 December 1952) is a Bangladeshi educator, sociologist and researcher who is currently professor at the Humanities and Social Sciences, Zayed University, UAE. He works on globalization studies and researches on labor migration and development issues in Asia. His research interests are Global studies, migration, global processes, political-economy of development and state, governance, migration diplomacy, and Asian globalization.
Khondker was born in Bagerhat district. He completed his BA & MA from University of Dhaka in 1975. He again completed MA from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada in 1978 and PhD from University of Pittsburgh, USA in 1985.
Khondker is a Professor of Sociology at Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, UAE since 2006. Previously, he taught at the National University of Singapore from 1985 to 2005. He is the co-chair of Research Committee on Social Transformations and Sociology of Development of the International Sociological Association.
Khondker has published articles on globalization, migration, state, civil society, democracy, military in politics, famine in International Sociology, The British Journal of Sociology, Comparative Sociology, Current Sociology, Journal of Consumer Culture, International Migration, Globalizations, Armed Forces and Society, Asian Journal of Social Sciences, and Oxford Handbook of Global Studies, among others. He co-authored Globalization: East/West. (Sage, 2010; Turkish translation, 2019) with Bryan Turner. He co-edited Asia and Europe in Globalization: Continents, Regions, and Nations (Brill 2006) with Goran Therborn and 21st Century Globalizations: Perspectives from the Gulf. (Dubai and Abu Dhabi: Zayed University Press, 2010) with Jan Nederveen Pieterse. He co-edited with Jan Nederveen Pieterse and Haeran Lim, COVID-19 and Governance (Routledge, 2021). He also co-edited with Olav Muurlink and Asif Bin Ali The Emergence of Bangladesh (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022).
Khondker received the outstanding faculty award at Zayed University in 2013-14. Khondker, a recipient of prestigious Andrew Mellon Fellowship as a graduate student also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Sociology in 2012.
