30 arrested in anti-militancy drive

At least 30 people, many of them leaders and activists of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chattra Shibir, were arrested in Dhaka and other districts in anti-militant drives on Tuesday.
In Dhaka, police arrested 19 people including Khilgaon thana Shibir president Md Motaher Hossain and general sectary Md Abdur Razzak from Khilgaon area in the capital Wednesday morning.
The other 17 arrested are Md Monirul Islam, Ismail Hossain, Md Kawsar Ahmed, Md Alauddin Kholifa, Md Rabiul Islam, Md Faysal Hossain, Md Ismail, Md Sumon Mia, Habibur Rahman Fahim, Md Kamruzzaman, Md Rasel Rana, Md Saifullah, Md Absar Ali, Md Monirul Islam, Md Ruman Molla, Md Shah Alam and Md Monir Hossain.
A press release issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s media and public relations wing said police also recovered seven cocktails, four machetes, books and computer.
New Age correspondent in Sylhet reported that Abdul Aziz, 25, a fourth year industrial and production engineering student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, and Mahmudul Karim, 26, a law department Master’s student of private-run Sylhet International University, were arrested for their suspected involvement in militancy.
Jalalabad police station officer-in-charge Akhter Hossain said a detective team from Dhaka detained them for their suspected involvement in extremism.
United News of Bangladesh, quoting Kushtia additional superintendent of police Joynul Abedin, reported that police detained a teacher and eight students along with books from the dormitory of Medical Assistant Training School in the district town on Tuesday as part of the government’s anti-militancy campaign.
Police is suspecting that the detained students might have links to Jamaat and Shibir.
