BNP to launch weeklong protests as Tarique jailed for 7 years

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday planned weeklong protests as party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s eldest son Tarique Rahman, and BNP senior vice-chairman, was sentenced for seven years in prison by the High Court in a money laundering case.
An emergency meeting chaired by Khaleda at her Gulshan office made the decision, meeting sources said.
The weeklong protests include protest rallies and processions in the capital and other parts of the country, the sources said.
A press conference announcing the protest programmes will be held at the party central office at 11:00am today, the sources said.
Khaleda sat in the emergency meeting at about 9:30pm after the High Court on the day pronounced its verdict sentencing Tarique in the money laundering case filed during the military-backed interim regime in 2007-2008 in which he was acquitted of the charge by a Special Judge’s Court.
Party standing committee members Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Nazrul Islam Khan, vice chairmen Abdullah Al Noman, Hafijuddin Ahmed, Selima Rahman, chairperson’s advisers Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Joynal Abedin, Shamsuzzaman Dudu and senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, joined the meeting.
