Global network needed to curb terrorism: Bernicat
The US ambassador in Dhaka, Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat said on Monday that a global network was needed to fight against terrorism.
At a briefing at Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka after a meeting with Dhaka south city mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon, the US ambassador said that ‘terrorists’ were maintaining a global network and it was not possible for a single country to fight alone against it.
About the government’s view on ‘home-grown’ extremists’ attacks, she said, ‘… terrorism does not need an army [huge group], terrorism works by individuals…two or three people together. Something someone is influencing people here and elsewhere to commit the acts of terror. So, I don’t think we have a difference in the way we view your government’s view of what is happening here. I think our views are very similar.’
She said the United States would help Bangladesh to find out any clue to extremist attacks.
Bernicat met the city mayor to invite the city corporation to join a global network of cities to establish a safe, strong and stable Dhaka South City Corporation.
The ambassador also repeated that the United States had no intention to occupy Bangladesh rather they wanted to work together to face common challenges.
Asked how the network would function, Bernicat replied, ‘Will get new ideas from others cities of the world.’
Sayeed Khokon said that he would join a conference in this regard scheduled for January 2017 in Washington.
Among others Dhaka South City Corporation chief executive officer Khan Mohammad Bilal, secretary Khan Md Rezaul Karim and other officials were present.
