Fakhrul brands HT Imam as ‘imam of AL’
The acting Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary-general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Tuesday termed prime minister’s adviser HT Imam the imam of the ruling Awami League and said that Imam had divulged all tricks of the government. He made the remarks at a discussion at the National Press Club jointly organised by Uttaranchal Chhatra Forum and Bangladesh Chhatra Forum to mark the 50th birthday of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman. Fakhrul said that HT Imam divulged the mechanism of holding one-sided January 5 general elections fielding Awami League-minded officials in the election process.
The BNP leader said that the Election Commission had changed the results of the January election at the directive of HT Imam to claim 40 per cent turnout in the polls. He said that Imam held news conference to reject his remarks came in media, but people did not accept it. Fakhrul said that sacked information communication technology minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui recently had revealed that Awami League did not believe in religion and the prime minister’s information technology adviser Sajib Wazed Joy got monthly salary of Tk 1.60 crore. He said that Latif was sacked as he spoke the truth. Fakhrul said that they had earlier demanded explanation from the government about the salary of Joy but got no response. Referring to remarks of state minister Promad Mankin that those who would not say Joy Bangla and Joy Bangabandhu could not stay in Bangladesh, Fakhrul said that such kinds of statements were heard many a time in the past. He said that the government was afraid of Tarique Rahman as he was doing politics of 16 crore people. Describing Tarique as future statesman of Bangladesh, he said that Tarique did politics for upholding independence and sovereignty of the country, establishing democracy and alleviating poverty.
Presiding over the discussion, Bangladesh Jatiya Party chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partha, also Bangladesh Student Forum adviser, said that Tarique was now the most popular leader of Bangladesh. Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafarullah Chowdhury said that the current movement should be taken to the street. BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, journalist Mahfuz Ullah, BNP chairperson’s advisory council members Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Shawkat Mahmud and Dhaka city BNP member-secretary Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel also addressed the discussion.
